Top 5 Lessons I Learned at SC Canada Security Congress 2012
As a relatively newly minted Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) – it seemed prudent to attend a few professional development sessions, so this year I attended the 3rd annual SC Congress in Toronto on 8-9 May.

Keeping Relevant to your Organization's Portfolio
Mentisor is pleased to announce that we’ve been featured in the PMI Credential Passport in March 2012 on the topic of “How do you ensure your program or project stays relevant to your organization's portfolio?
Unfortunately our “team” submission was only attributed to our Principal Consultant – but in any case – it’s been an honor to have been asked for our input – and, while the article has been truncated for the sake of brevity (its an on-line magazine after all) – we thought it would be good to post our entire Q&A session with them here.
Top 5 Consulting Scams
We’ve all heard the stories of the unscrupulous consultant who billed more hours than he actually put into a project; or the consultant who charges high rates for his work, and turns around and outsources the contract to a lower cost consultant or off-shore resource.
The truth is there are a lot of other scams going on – and they aren’t all being perpetuated by the consultants themselves.
The “Supplemental” temporary/term employee; the worst of both worlds
Many people seeking employment these days are tempted by the question: do I want to be an independent contractor or an employee?
While the choice has always existed, many organizations are back to promoting a third option: contractual/term-employee (supplemental) – which may sound good for a short engagement, but could be costing you more than you think.
Top PM Tools/Templates
What are the core Project Management tools/templates and processes? I realize we already have a wonderful “body of knowledge”, with its 42 processes in 5 process groups and 9 knowledge areas, but I’m really talking about the “core” essentials. What do you need, as a minimum, to “manage” a moderately challenging project?
Tools/Templates: Individual Post Project Assessment (IPPA)
As part of the ongoing development in my own project methodology (small-PM), one issue kept coming up – which was how to document and disseminate information on the individual performance of team members associated with our projects.
Tips & Tricks: Meeting Invitations
So there you are, scanning through the myriad of endless emails in your inbox, as you do each and every morning. And as fate would have it, there they are waiting amongst the email onslaught. Much like young children waiting behind fortified snow hills, snowballs prepared in advance for the unsuspecting character to wander by: the often dreaded meeting invitation. Since you obviously don’t have enough meetings to already attend, you are quick to click on the Accept button. But what exactly did you just accept? And why?
Tips & Tricks: Quick Meeting Minutes
I’ll admit it; I was notoriously bad for not writing up minutes or records of decision after meetings (I’ll leave the distraction between the two for a future article). I’ve gotten much better in recent years – due in part to using the actual original meeting invitation (assuming you issued one electronically) as part of the solution/quick fix.
Professional Development (post-certification) for PMs
This is a continuation of the discussions from our Blog Talk radio show – Soapbox #12 where we asked: What are the post-PMP®/ongoing professional development requirements of a Project Manager (PM)?
Case Study of IT/Business Misalignment: Web-Branding
Many business leaders view information technology (IT) as little more than office automation: word processing, spreadsheets and presentations. IT has changed the workspace, and business functions that once were exclusively the domains of experts in those disciplines must now include integration of the new technologies.
“Minuiting” Documents
I never cease to be amazed at how much paper is on my desk and inundating my project files despite living in this “paperless” era.
Post-Its aside (which invariably disappear when you need them most) one of the key problems that many of us encounter is how to keep track of updates and other various notations on activities/events with a paper document.
